Somebody’s Attic sees growth and room for expansion

With 30 years of business, Somebody’s Attic thrift stores, located in downtown Logan and Smithfield, see room for expansion at a 15 percent growth rate this year.

The thrift stores benefit Cache County’s Citizens Against Physical and Sexual Abuse and Child and Family Support Center.

According to Somebody’s Attic director Joy Shaw, an employee of 20 years, Somebody’s Attic has seen an increase in earnings since its opening 30 years ago.

“The first year we opened in Smithfield we averaged $2,500 a month,” Shaw said. “This year we are closer to $8,000 or $9,000 a month.”

Shaw said she predicts to earn around $106,000 in profits this year.

Though there are no official plans, Shaw said there have been suggestions on how to deal with this growth effectively.

“We have made some considerations about moving to another location or having another store in Hyrum,” Shaw said.

Bailey Davis, an employee of three years, said she credits Shaw for the recent growth and increase in sales.

“Joy is an amazing networker,” Davis said. “She’s really great at getting our name out there.”

In addition to providing funds to local non-profit organizations, these thrift stores are having a positive impact on the community, according to Shaw.

“This is not a high-end community by any stretch of the imagination,” Shaw said. “Part of our mission statement is to provide quality merchandise to low-income families. We’re actually supporting a segment of our population that has a need.”
