Children’s Justice Center prepares for yard sale fundraiser

The Children’s Justice Center, a facility that serves children experiencing the crisis that comes with the disclosure of physical or sexual abuse, will hold a yard sale at the center on May 30 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. to raise funds for the organization.

According to Mike Stauffer, the director of the Children’s Justice Center, a significant amount of the center’s income comes from fundraisers, like the yard sale, that are put on by the Friends of Children’s Justice Center committee.

“There is some government funding, but there is a lot that comes from the committee,” Stauffer said. “The proceeds from this yard sale will help to cover expenses of the center and what is done here.”

Committee president Relia Maughan said she anticipates making around $500 to help cover the cost of maintaining the center.

“The friends board owns the Children’s Justice Center home,” Maughan said. “We have to pay for all the upkeep and improvements that go with making it a home, so all of our fundraisers go into an account that will help pay for repairs and things like that.”

The center provides a comfortable place for children to go to receive their interview and examination after being abused, according to Maughan.

“These kids go to the emergency room, the police department or sheriff’s office for their interviews and examinations and they are scared to death,” Maughan said. “Our home provides a comfortable environment for these kids.”

In addition to providing immediate comfort to these children, the center uses a tape recording of the interviews held at the center so children do not have to testify in court and feel intimidated or scared, Maughan said.

Maughan said this event will not be as big as others they have planned for this year, but any amount of money raised will help to run the center.

The yard sale will be held at the Children’s Justice Center located at 1362 N 400 W in Logan. Visit http://www.cachecjc.com/ for more information.
